Carthusia

Carthusia is a small artisanal perfume house on the island of Capri whose name is the Latin form of "Certosa" (charterhouse), after the Carthusian monastery of San Giacomo. House lore traces the origin to 1380, when the monastery's prior is said to have noticed that water left standing with island wildflowers had taken on a scent later attributed to the local wild carnation; the modern company dates from 1948, when a prior rediscovered old formulae in the monastery library and, with papal permission, brought in a chemist from Piedmont to open what was billed as the smallest perfume laboratory in the world. The house is known for bright Mediterranean compositions built on Capri's own materials — citrus, myrtle, broom, wild carnation, jasmine and rosemary — still produced in small batches on the island. Perfumers associated with the line include Laura Bosetti Tonatto on the older classics and Luca Maffei (with Antoine Lie on part of the 2025 Intenso collection) on the modern releases.
