Clinique
Designer · United States · est. 1968
Clinique was launched at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York in September 1968 by Estée Lauder Companies, developed by Vogue beauty editor Carol Phillips with Evelyn Lauder and dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich as the first dermatologist-developed prestige beauty brand. Its fragrance arm began in 1971 with Aromatics Elixir, Bernard Chant's patchouli-heavy chypre, marketed as an 'aromatherapy' scent built on essential oils rather than a conventional perfume. In 1997 the house created Happy, a grapefruit-bright floral that won the Fragrance Foundation's Fragrance of the Year and became one of the best-selling American fragrances of its era, spawning a long line of flankers. The perfume line remains small and focused, with work by Bernard Chant, Sophia Grojsman, Jean Claude Delville, Rodrigo Flores-Roux, Olivier Cresp, Olivier Polge, Christophe Laudamiel and Aliénor Massenet.
